Lily Wei is a Chinese-New Zealander artist currently living and working in London.
Her work begins with encounters. Drawn to objects and creatures that linger in memory, Wei uses painting as a way of examining why certain forms acquire an unexpected emotional charge.
Painting functions for Wei as a process of sustained attention. By dwelling on things that might otherwise go unnoticed, she explores how ordinary objects and creatures can become repositories for memory, emotion, and imagination. Her work considers the unstable boundary between what is seen and what is felt, revealing the strange and intimate lives that can emerge from the everyday.
Wei's paintings examine the moment at which observation becomes projection. Working from found objects, domestic artefacts, natural specimens and personal encounters, she explores how ordinary things acquire emotional, symbolic and narrative weight.
